UPSC ESE 2027 Exam Pattern
ESE 2027 is conducted in three stages: Stage-I (Preliminary Examination, objective type), Stage-II (Main Examination, conventional type), and Stage-III (Personality Test/Interview).
Stage-I: Preliminary Examination (Objective Type)
| Paper | Subject | Duration | Maximum Marks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paper-I | General Studies and Engineering Aptitude | 2 hours | 200 |
| Paper-II | Engineering Discipline-specific (Civil / Mechanical / Electrical / Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering, as opted) | 3 hours | 300 |
| Total | 500 marks |
Only candidates who qualify the Preliminary/Stage-I Examination are eligible for admission to the Main/Stage-II Examination. Marks obtained in Stage-I by qualified candidates count towards the final order of merit. Approximately 6 to 7 times the number of vacancies are admitted to the Main Examination.
Stage-II: Main Examination (Conventional Type)
| Paper | Subject | Duration | Maximum Marks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paper-I | Engineering Discipline-specific (Civil / Mechanical / Electrical / Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering, as opted) | 3 hours | 300 |
| Paper-II | Engineering Discipline-specific (same discipline as Paper-I) | 3 hours | 300 |
| Total | 600 marks |
Conventional papers must be answered in English; question papers are set in English only.
Stage-III: Personality Test/Interview
Carries 200 marks, with no minimum qualifying marks. Candidates summoned are about twice the number of vacancies to be filled. Special attention is paid to assessing the candidate’s capacity for leadership, initiative, intellectual curiosity, tact and other social qualities, mental and physical energy, powers of practical application, and integrity of character.
Negative Marking
- In objective-type papers, there are 4 alternatives for each question; for each wrong answer, 1/3rd of the marks assigned to that question is deducted as a penalty.
- If a candidate gives more than one answer to a question, it is treated as wrong, with the same penalty, even if one of the answers happens to be correct.
- Questions left unanswered carry no penalty.
Final ranking is determined by the sum of marks obtained in Stage-I (Preliminary), Stage-II (Main), and Stage-III (Personality Test/Interview). Candidates are allotted to various services based on their rank and preferences expressed for services/posts.
