- A pass in the National Eligibility Test (NET) conducted by the UGC or the CSIR, or a similar test accredited by the UGC, like SLET/SET. Candidates who have been awarded a Ph.D. Degree under the University Grants Commission (Minimum Standards and Procedure for Award of M.Phil./Ph.D. Degree) Regulations, 2009 or 2016, and their amendments, may be exempted from NET/SLET/SET.
Candidates who registered for the Ph.D. programme before July 11, 2009 are governed by the Ordinances, Bye-laws and Regulations that applied at that time. They are exempted from NET/SLET/SET only if they meet all of these conditions:

The Registrar or the Dean (Academic Affairs) of the university concerned must certify that these conditions are met. NET/SLET/SET is not required for Master’s programmes in disciplines for which the UGC, CSIR or a similar UGC-accredited test (like SLET/SET) does not conduct NET/SLET/SET.

The notice also sets these rules for Assistant Professor:
- A minimum of 55% marks (or an equivalent grade in a point-scale) at the Master’s level is the essential qualification for direct recruitment of teachers.
- A 5% relaxation is allowed at both the Bachelor’s and the Master’s level for Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe and Other Backward Classes (OBC) (Non-creamy Layer) candidates.

- The time taken to acquire an M.Phil. and/or Ph.D. Degree does not count as teaching or research experience for appointment to teaching posts. Active service spent pursuing a Research Degree alongside teaching, without taking any leave, counts as teaching experience for direct recruitment.
